I think the problem, at least partly, is that people tend to generalize so much. It's not only pn fandom but anywhere. One tinhatter - or hater, or anyone, really - does something that's really distasteful and completely crossing the line? Everybody is stigmatized. It's understandable but not really rational.
After all we can't possibly all have the same opinion about anything.
And idk, like I said I've been lucky with how understanding people have been to me and all, but I also know some people don't have that. It's astounding how people we think we're friends with, turn out to be anything but that over a simple disagreement.
