So I've spent most of my dad today watching old movies I made yeaarrs ago and reminiscing and crying then laughing and crying some more... anyhow, I then dled a ton of LOTR fanvids from the internetz that I thought had been deleted and was SO HAPPY to see that they weren't and, it got me in the mood to maybe try making a few of my own.

Do I have any fan vid makeres on here that would be willing to give me a few pointers? If not that, then what program do you use to make them? I've tried my hand at WMM, Magix and Adobe Premiere [god that is soooo complicated] but i'm interested in knowing what others have found that work for them.

Any help or advice people can give is much appreciated. :]

I work in Sony Vegas - any version is good. As far as I know it's a very popular program and lots of vidders use it.

If you have any specific question, feel free to ask me, I'm always up for helping new vidders ;)

Okay, thank you! I've heard that one mentioned a few times.

I do have a few, if thats alright, just feel free to answer what you want. :D

One would be, how easy do you find the program to use on a scale of 1-10? Is it easy to pick up and navigate or does it take hours of fooling with? I guess I should also ask how long you've used the program, yourself.

Two, does it run smoothly? What I mean by this is that I wish to put in a three and a half hour movie and then proceed to chop it into bits to make the vid - will that take time or should the movie be able to easily be placed in the program? I hope that made sense. :p

Do you, yourself, find everything easy to use? Are all the tools you need easily accessible or do you have to search for everything?

That's all I've got for now but I'm sure that's enough - sorry about that! xD

Well, if you asked me this first question, like, 2 years ago I would say THIS IS A FUCKING TOUGH SHIT D: But right now I think it's pretty easy, and it's more about your imagination that technic, you know? I mean, when you get the basic idea of how the editing works, it's all about thinking up new effects and ways of editing :)

Speaking about navigating - for me it's VERY simple. Not sure why, maybe because I'm a lefty - but I tried to work in AE ( AND YES THIS IS THE TOUGH SHIT D: ) and I found it pretty hard to work there, without even the part when you have to figure out how to import the episodes in there *__*

I firstopened Vegas like in October 2007. I wasn't that passionate about vidding then and there weren't that many tutorials and tips on how to get started, you know? So I kind of had to go in blind and figure out all the things myself. Plus, I had school which was in the way, so it took me almost 1,5 months to finish my first very crappy video. After that it took me sometime about a month to finish my second, which was kind of better, and I tried new things. Since then it was all about trying new things. Still is. I think you just have to try to create your first video, like a finished product just to get the idea of how to do it, you know? How to come all the way from the beginning to the end.

2 question: There's this thing in Vegas called TRIMMER. I know that some vidder don't even know how to use it, which for me was a HUGE surprise, because it was the first thing I figured out myself and I found it pretty easy and useful. Yes, it does work smoothly. But it depends on your PC. Video files with huge resolution, like Bluray copis or video files with huge resolution will work slower. Also, there's this thing as a preview window - when you try to watch your transition or different complicated effects it can, like, be veeeeery slow. But it's bearable. But then again, there's a lot of small things, you know? It is something for some viders and something different to others.

Do you, yourself, find everything easy to use?
Now? Yes. I the beginning? No. I'm still surprised I didn't stop in the beginning *__*

Are all the tools you need easily accessible or do you have to search for everything?
Well, you can look up online additional transitions or effects or color schemes. But I think in the beginning it's not necessarily for you. As for everything else - you have everything you need :)

Well, I think for now you have to find a program and open it. Look at it, try how it works. I'm sure you'll have more questions then lol Feel free to ask them ;)

If anyone clues you into an inexpensive, relatively simple program for making videos, I'd be interested. I intend to be shooting plenty of baby footage of our son, and I'd like to have the option of doing something interesting with it.

I would recommend Windows Movie Maker on a PC. It's very easy yet gives great results and it comes with the pc. :D

I used to use Windows Movie Maker for my vids, but pretty much everyone uses Sony Vegas, which I hate with the passion of a thousand suns. I find WMM significantly more user friendly, which is helpful because I learned to vid on a Mac and there's really nothing comparable to that software.

Yeah I've used Vegas before and it is a pretty daunting program, I'll admit. I preferred Magix to that one.
I have made vids with WMM but know that using that - and admitting you use that - can get you laughed at as a vidder but for a starting-out one like me, I think I may stick with that. I can't get Vegas to work now anyhow.
I do really want to get a mac sometime tho, I have tried that program that comes with it and I really liked it.

No one's ever laughed at me for using WMM, at least not to my face, but I'm not a very popular vidder. You might want to start out using WMM just to see if you like editing and stuff like that. If you get sick of it after a few days, there's no point in downloading and learning to use a more advanced program.

I used to use Final Cut Pro for Mac and it was a gorgeous program, I loved it.

I stick with WMM. It's all I got and I make due. I used to use the Mac iMovie thing at school. That program was a pain I though.

Yeah that's probably what I'll do - at least for the time being until I figure out if I really want to start taking vidding seriously. I mean, really, what's in that program is really all you need - it lets you cut and piece together, mute and add music and add a few transitions. If you want more than that then yeah it'd better to look for a more high-tech program but I think, for me, for now, WMM would be best. :]

My videos always look a little pixelated when I use WMM. But it's about what's in the vid, not the quality ;D
